The Digital Bits is reporting that Universal has officially announced that Dune: Extended Edition will be released on DVD on 01/31/2006. It will be a 2-disc set and will contain the original theatrical version (137 minutes) and an all-new extended version (177 minutes), both in anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. They also mention that there is no word on whether David Lynch has had anything to do with the new extended version.

Their Rumor Mill also reports that Serenity will be released on DVD on 12/20/2005, and the disc will include an audio commentary by Joss Whedon.

Previously, I complained that Universal had delayed the new Dune DVD release indefinitely. According to this and this from The Digital Bits, the DVD has been delayed because David Lynch wants to create a new Director's Cut to replace the Extended Edition that has been shown on TV for years.

Also, it has been confirmed that a Flash Gordon: Special Edition is in the works at Universal.

And now I am really disappointed. According to this the Dune: Extended Edition DVD I mentioned before has been delayed "for several months."

According to The Digital Bits:

"Universal is releasing on 5/10 Dune: Extended Edition.

The Dune: Extended Edition will be released in a metal snap case (SRP $27.98). 2 versions of the film will be included... a 137-minute theatrical version, and the 177-minute extended edition. BOTH will be available in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen (which would mark the first time the extended edition was available in widescreen). The theatrical edition will feature both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio, while the extended edition will be Dolby Digital 5.1 only. Extras will include never before seen "behind-the-scenes" footage, documentaries on the special effects, visual design and costumes, deleted scenes, original photographs and artwork from the set (newly resurrected from personal collections) and more. NICE. We are SO pumped for this title here at The Bits. We've been waiting a LONG time for it."

I am sooooo psyched about this. This movie was my introduction to one of the most imaginative worlds I've ever read about. And while it deviates from Frank Herbert's books quite a bit, it's dream-like quality and vision of prophecy have always pulled me right in. I've been waiting 6 years for an anamorphic DVD release to replace my aging laserdisc copy.

Now if they would just release an anamorphic DVD of Flash Gordon.
