According to Queen Online, Brian May, and The Digital Bits, a Silver Anniversary Edition DVD of Flash Gordon will be released in the UK on October 10, 2005. It features "anamorphic widescreen video, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio, audio commentary by director Mike Hodges and an interview with him as well, a second audio commentary with actor Brian Blessed, a photo slideshow, the original Queen theatrical trailer, and the first episode of the original 1940s serial Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe." Here's a peek at the cover art:

Flash Gordon: Silver Anniversary Edition

It is unknown when, if ever, this will be released in the United States. I'm gonna have to go research region-free hacks for my dvd player.

Previously, I complained that Universal had delayed the new Dune DVD release indefinitely. According to this and this from The Digital Bits, the DVD has been delayed because David Lynch wants to create a new Director's Cut to replace the Extended Edition that has been shown on TV for years.

Also, it has been confirmed that a Flash Gordon: Special Edition is in the works at Universal.

Flash Gordon is on its way according to this. I guess someone at Universal finally woke up.

According to The Digital Bits:

"Universal is releasing on 5/10 Dune: Extended Edition.

The Dune: Extended Edition will be released in a metal snap case (SRP $27.98). 2 versions of the film will be included... a 137-minute theatrical version, and the 177-minute extended edition. BOTH will be available in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen (which would mark the first time the extended edition was available in widescreen). The theatrical edition will feature both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio, while the extended edition will be Dolby Digital 5.1 only. Extras will include never before seen "behind-the-scenes" footage, documentaries on the special effects, visual design and costumes, deleted scenes, original photographs and artwork from the set (newly resurrected from personal collections) and more. NICE. We are SO pumped for this title here at The Bits. We've been waiting a LONG time for it."

I am sooooo psyched about this. This movie was my introduction to one of the most imaginative worlds I've ever read about. And while it deviates from Frank Herbert's books quite a bit, it's dream-like quality and vision of prophecy have always pulled me right in. I've been waiting 6 years for an anamorphic DVD release to replace my aging laserdisc copy.

Now if they would just release an anamorphic DVD of Flash Gordon.
